    Fields: Approximately 100 factors for about two dozen demographic categories from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (e.g., age, income, home value, education, employment). Most are percentage values using various universes.
    Raw numbers are included for the breakdown of voting age by race by non-hispanic/spanish origin status. This selection provides a set of factors that are statistically additive and mutually exclusive (SAME), adding to 100% (rounding excepted).
    In addition, raw numbers are included for several areal factors (size and density) as well as TPOP, TVAP and for the total vote for President (percentage values included for 2000 President and 2002 Congress).
    A summary variable is included for several socio-economic status (SES) indicators. These are calculated into one value that begins at 0 and is open-ended. A value of 100 indicates the unit (CD) has approximately the same value as the nation or the state (both are included.)
    A simple estimate for citizens of voting age is provided using the percentage value for the non-citizen population. This factor is simply applied to the voting age population. This is merely a simple estimate as the citizen status of the voting age is not a normal census variable.

In most states these are the first plans used following the 2000 census for the 2001/2002 elections. States which redistricted following the 2001/2002 elections include:
  • AZ (different plans used due to litigation);
  • GA (different plans used due to litigation);
  • ME (a late decennial plan for 2004, litigation involved);
  • MA (different plans used due to litigation).
  • MT (a late decennial plan for 2004, litigation involved);
  • NH (a wholesale change drawn by the legislature replacing a court-drawn plan);
  • NC (different plans used due to litigation);
  • RI (different plans used for the Senate due to litigation);

    1. These are the basic datasets for much of our own analysis and publications. They are provided to the academic community to facilitate research.

    Formats:
    1. DBF (DataBase File): We use FoxPro for our database work and can generate a dbase IV compatible format.
    2. CSV (Comma-Separated Value): Each field is separated by a comma, easily imported into Excel.
    3. SDF (System Default Format): A flat file with fixed field width which you must enter to import.
    Delivery:
    1. ZIP (Compressed): All types are compressed into one distribution file with appropriate documentation. You generally don't have to choose a format upon ordering.
    2. EMAIL (Electronic): We can generally email you the file depending upon the size and your email capability.
    3. CDROM: We can copy the file to a CDROM for an extra charge of $25.00.
    4. DISKETTES: We can also copy files to 3.5 inch diskettes for a extra charge of $25.00.
    Election Data:
    1. Data fields generally will include votes for the Democrat, the Republican and any major Independent.
    2. Coverage for Independent/Minor Party candidates may vary by year and level of data.
    3. In general, candidates are not separately included unless they received more than 5% of the vote for the race/office.
    4. For President by County, for 2004 and 2000, minor party candidates are included separately in the dataset for the first year. They are combined in the dataset for the succeeding election.
    5. While percentages based upon total vote and other factors are included, the user should always calculate their own vote totals and percentages.
    6. The presidential results by congressional district, as always, reflect an estimate of the best-available contemporaneous data and may be the result of analytical judgment and allocation of some votes for the typical problems encountered in this type of project, notably split jurisdictions or electoral units and centrally reported early or absentee votes.
